Button Health Guidelines

All action buttons and D-pad inputs should illuminate immediately upon press and clear immediately upon release. If inputs flicker or stick, clean around the membrane or conductive rubber pad with 99% isopropyl alcohol.

Connect Controller

Connect your controller to your computer via USB cable or Bluetooth. If the browser doesn't respond, press any button on the controller to activate the connection.

How Controller Buttons Work and Why Switches Fail

Gamepads use conductive silicone rubber pads or mechanical microswitches beneath face buttons and shoulder bumpers. When pressed, the conductive carbon pill completes a circuit on the PCB trace.

Common Button Issues

  • Unresponsive Buttons: Carbon pill worn down or liquid spill residue blocking PCB contacts.
  • Sticking Buttons: Dirt and sugar build-up inside the plastic button housing.
  • Double Registering: Worn rubber dome spring tearing, causing false double-clicks.

How do I test if a controller button is sticking or broken?

Press each face button and shoulder bumper on your gamepad while watching the Button Tester chips above. If a button chip stays green after release or fails to highlight, the physical switch is sticking or worn.

What is gamepad button ghosting?

Button ghosting occurs when pressing multiple buttons simultaneously causes unregistered inputs or false triggers. Our tool checks matrix isolation so every simultaneous press is recognized.

Does this test face buttons, D-pad, and stick clicks?

Yes! It tests A/Cross, B/Circle, X/Square, Y/Triangle, L1/R1, L2/R2, L3/R3 stick clicks, D-Pad (Up, Down, Left, Right), Select/Share, and Start/Options.

How this test works & its limits
  • This test reads your controller through the browser's standard Gamepad API — no drivers, no installs, nothing leaves your device.
  • Readings depend on connection mode: Bluetooth reports at lower rates than USB. Compare like-for-like (wired vs wired).
  • We measure the input reaching the browser — display lag and game-engine queues are outside this test's view.
  • A clean reading now does not guarantee no drift in-game: deadzones differ per game, and wear develops over time. Use the Drift Timeline to track yours.
  • This is a diagnostic, not a hardware-lab certification. For repair or RMA decisions, confirm with a second run or second tool.
